How It Started
My obsession with Living Single became evident later in life but as I look back it was so clear. When I grew up, I was going to live in a beautiful Bed Stuy brownstone with my best friends.
And then I realized all my 'old friends’ were now my ‘friends from home’ and I’d have to create MY version of what this was going to look like in my new found home of SE DC.
Community is Life
We were sold this bill of goods to find happiness in “owning a pieces of the American Dream’ when in reality, happiness was never supposed to be there.
It was supposed to be community with one another. So this blog was founded in hopes I can attract the right tribe to compliment the community I am coming to know and love.
Maxine Taught Us Consistency
Community is consistent. There wasn’t a day when Max didn’t stop by and check in on the homies. There was a predictability about even her unpredictability in showing up. There was comfort in knowing that ‘outlandish, fun and in your face’ Max
Fun fact, Max was in fact supposed to live in the house with the other three women but because her character was so strong, the network said ‘nah’.
Sinclair Taught Us to Be Light
Say what you will, Sinclair’s big heart is what kept this show as light hearted and fun to watch. Being light and soft is what the girls are going for today. Gone are the conversations about how to boss up. It’s about how to get what needs to get done, done so that the rest of your life can be enjoyed.
Khadijah Taught Us Cooperative Economics
Why have a big empty space to yourself when you can have the people you love and care about the most are with you by your side.
I think about the first episode when the girls gathered in the bathroom and how that even came to be. They kicked it off with a deep understanding of a shared space.
Now I don’t know about sharing a bathroom with folks but we can definitely kiki!
Fun Fact: The studio green lit Kim Coles and Queen Latifah for a show originally. The other two ladies were added later on.
REGINE: If It Ain’t Fly, Then Why?
What I love about a Black girl Kiki is the creativity behind it. Even a simple Brunch can get fly as hell.
But even if we’re at home, the matching socks and flip flops will due just fine….
In case you wanted to know my ‘Big Three’:
Sun is in Khadijah
Moon in Sinclair
Rising Regine
Mars in Maxine
